Phillip F. Martens

Phillip Francis Martens, age 72, of Blair, Nebraska, formerly of Modale, Iowa, passed away at his home on May 22, 2016. Phillip was born on July 29, 1943 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Clarence “Soup” and Margaret (Chambers) Martens. Phillip graduated from Missouri Valley High School in 1961. He then attended Dana College in Blair, Nebraska. He served in the Army Reserves during the Viet Nam War. Phillip worked at Gardner Implement before working part time at M&R Oil in Modale, Iowa and driving a semi for Warner Trucking. Phillip began farming with Jay Stansberry, a relationship that last many years. He served on the Modale Co-op’s Board as a director for many years and was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Missouri Valley, Iowa. Phillip enjoyed farming, traveling, and motorcycle trips, including one to Alaska. But his favorite things to do were visiting with friends and family, especially regarding Missouri Valley, Modale area history. He was also a wealth of information on family history. Phillip is preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include many cousins and special friend Lois Chandler. Visitation will be held Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at Hennessey Funeral Home in Missouri Valley, Iowa. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday 11:00 a.m. June 4, 2016 at Hennessey Funeral Home in Missouri Valley, Iowa with Pastor Stephen Pera officiating. Organist will be Kris Gash and music selections are “Amazing Grace” and “The Old Rugged Cross”. In lieu of flowers family request memorials to the to the American Heart Association. The family would like to invite everyone to a time of lunch and fellowship to the St. Paul Lutheran Church after the committal service at the cemetery.
