Phyllis J. “Joanne” Nickelson
December 3, 1934-November 27, 2023
Phyllis “Joanne” Martin was born near Monticello, Illinois, on December 3, 1934, to Elbert and Bertha (Cooley) Martin. She graduated from Monticello High School and attended Northwestern University where she earned her BS degree in Education. She taught second grade at Southside School in Champaign, Illinois, for 3 years. Joanne married Willis “Nick” Nickelson, on June 19, 1960. She dedicated her life to the upbringing of their 3 children. When their grandchildren were born, she provided loving care to them as well. Joanne enjoyed reading and attending her children’s and grandchildren’s various activities.
Preceded in death by her parents; siblings: Elbert, Jr., LaVerne Connell, William “Bill” (Dorothy), Bernice (John) Anderson, Imogene (Lonnie) Smith, and Mary (Louis) Olivero. She is survived by her husband, Nick; children: Jeffrey (Carol Anne), their children: Kelly, Nicole and Stacie; David (Kristin) and their children: Lesley Nickelson and Ashley (Ryan) Meyo; Carol Struck and her children: Cody, Trevor and Jacob; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A private burial service will be held at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
