Rev. Leon Wayne Hammack

Rev. Leon Wayne Hammack

March 16, 1935 – November 9, 2021

Rev. Leon Wayne Hammack passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, November 9, 2021.

Leon was born on March 16, 1935, in Canton, Ohio, the youngest of three boys to John and Thelma Hammack.  He graduated from McKinley High School in Canton, Ohio in 1953 and North Central Bible College in 1956 where he met Amy Rihanek.  They were married July 3, 1955.

Leon’s love for Jesus showed everywhere he served.  He ministered in the church as a deacon, a Bible teacher, and lead worship for 30 years.  Leon was a Gideon from 1977-1985.  In 1985 he became a full-time minister and served at Glad Tidings Assembly, Omaha Christian Center, as an interim pastor for seven months at Elkhorn Valley Assembly of God in West Point, Nebraska and two mission trips to help build churches in Quito, Ecuador.   His passion for worship was passed along to his children and grandchildren who greatly loved him, and they were his joy and delight.

He loved watching football and playing dominos, and was the family’s handyman.  Little known facts were drafting blueprints for a house and building a to scale model of the house to pass his architecture class in high school, and to the surprise of the church youth he was quite the pool shark.

Leon was preceded in death by parents, John and Thelma Hammack; brothers, John and William Hammack; and two grandchildren.  He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Amy; daughters: Cynthia Setlak (Larry), Valerie Schaaf (Mike), and Connie Elliott (Jeff); and son, Jeffrey Hammack (Colleen); twelve grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren and one on the way.

The family would like to thank Endless Journey Hospice for their care in allowing us to keep Dad at home, and through his final days.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: Monday, Nov. 29th at 10:30am at Spirit Life Assembly of God, 4815 Harrison St., Omaha 68157.  In lieu of flowers, memorials will be directed to Gideons International.  To view a live broadcast of the Memorial Service, please go to www.heafeyheafey.com and click the “View Live Cast” button on the home page.

My sincere condolences on the passing of Leon. My family and I used to attend Glad Tiding Church back in the day and I remember Pastor Hammock well. If I remember correctly, I believe that he was my 7th grade Sunday school pastor. I really learned a lot and he did have such a thirst for Jesus and that thirst and love was shown in the way he taught us. May God bless you all and keep his loving arms around you and protect you.

My deepest sympathies to Amy and Pastor Leon’s family. My late husband, Mike LeDent and I , spent many, many Sunday afternoons with Leon and Amy having lunch between services at Omaha Christian Center. We became good friends for many years. Leon was a kind and gentle man who loved Jesus and his many, many friends from his ministry for decades of service to the Lord. May God comfort you Amy in the days and weeks to come.

Galatians 5:22 says, “But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control”. These are the qualities that define a believer in Christ. This was Leon Hammack. A man of unwavering integrity and resolute character and yet the most humble man we have ever known. But the best thing about Leon was that he was our friend, our mentor, our Pastor. To Amy and family, we remember you in our prayers and trust God will comfort you now and in the days to come.
