Richard “Dick” Irwin Vaughn

Richard “Dick” Irwin Vaughn

March 3, 1933 – September 15, 2024

Passed away peacefully at home in Sun Lakes, Arizona, surrounded by his family.

Dick was preceded in death by his wife, Rita; parents, Irwin and Louella Vaughn; daughter, Therese McNeil; granddaughter, Andrea Ryan.

He is survived by children: Phil (Donna), Marirose Fox (Howard Trenary), Jean, Mike (Patty), Rick (Dee), Ann Hazuka (Tom), Tim (Pat), and Laura Cardenas; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; in-laws, Jim and Rita Aguilar, Frank and Janis Aguilar, and Margie Livingston.

Dick and wife, Rita, were married on October 20,1951, and celebrated 64 years together.  They raised their nine children in the Field Club area of Omaha, NE.  Dick initially worked as a hog salesman at the stockyards after he got married.  He was encouraged to become an electrician and worked at Fitzpatrick Electric and followed that as a partner at Richard’s Electric.  After joining the IBEW Local 22, he worked with Modern Electric, Baxter Electric, Falcone Electric, KW Electric and Bob Weak Electric.  In 1976, Dick became the owner of Vaughn Electric, with his sons.  In 1996, Dick and Rita built their retirement home in Sun Lakes, Arizona, and they began their full-time retirement there in 1998.

Dick was a longtime member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Omaha.  He was active with his family in many activities there, including Eucharistic Adoration, Knights of Columbus, Parish Council, Men’s Club, Festival, and coaching youth football.

He was a huge Nebraska Football Fan; and even appeared in a copy of Sports Illustrated with some friends that had gone on a last-minute whim to see a Missouri game.  For 30 years, he accompanied various friends on trips to the Indy 500.  He was a big supporter of the Soap Box Derby Association (and even talked emphatically about it during his last days).

In lieu of flowers, Memorials are suggested to Our Lady of Lourdes School Endowment Fund.

Sad to learn about the passing of Dick Vaughn, especially while we Carol and I are traveling and unable to attend his services. He was a legend and one of the best men I have ever known. Dick and Rita traveled to Hawaii with my mom and dad and I can still remember them laughing about the good times they had. I feel fortunate to have had him as a coach and friend. He will be missed.

We have a lot of great memories of going to the annual 4th of July parties hosted by the Vaughns when we were kids. We’re so sorry to hear of his passing and will keep your family in our prayers.
