Richard L. Hatcher

Richard Leo Hatcher age 86, of Missouri Valley, Iowa, passed away June 19, 2013 at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Richard “Rich” was born in a farm house west of Missouri valley, Iowa to John and Sophia Christina (Mandelko) Hatcher on June 24, 1926. Rich lived his entire life in the Harrison County area. He went through the eighth grade in country schools, attending Herring, River Sioux and Beebeetown districts. He farmed with his father and brothers until approximately 1955, using horses. Rich rode and loved horses all his life. After farming he took a job with Fletcher Reel, working the stockyards in Missouri Valley. Following this, he went to work for Schouler Welch Grain Elevator in Council Bluffs for about eighteen years. Rich next worked for Logan –Magnolia Schools and the Missouri Valley Schools as a custodian, retiring in 1984. On July 17, 1983, Rich married the love of his life, Marjorie Jane (Meyer) McHugh in Council Bluffs, Iowa. They made their home in Logan, Missouri Valley area. Rich loved to play guitar, singing country western songs and sometimes making up his own songs for a special person or occasion. He taught himself to play guitar. He was the lead singer for the Wonder Strings and enjoyed playing for several years. Rich loved having animals around, raising a garden, and most of all spending time with his family and telling stories and laughing. In later years, he was a constant support to his grandchildren, going to activities of all kinds. Richard was preceded in death by his parents John and Sophia, brothers: Marvin, Homer, Roy, Lester, and Leonard, sisters: Millie, Edna, Bernice, Clara, Nellie, Dollie, Helen, Jo Anne and Lois. Richard is survived by his wife: Marjorie Hatcher of Missouri Valley, Iowa; sons Gail Hatcher of Missouri Valley, Iowa; sons: Gail (Cheryl) Hatcher of Missouri Valley, Iowa; Monte (Michelle) Hatcher of Logan, Iowa; three step-sons: Randy (Valerie) McHugh, Rick (Susie) McHugh, Russell (Tracy) McHugh, all of Missouri Valley, Iowa; fifteen grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren; many other family and friends. The family would like to invite everyone to a time of lunch and fellowship to the Eagles Club after the service.
