Richard Thomas “Dick” German

Richard Thomas “Dick” German

January 1, 1954 – June 10, 2024

Richard Thomas was born in Columbus, Nebraska, on January 1, 1954, the fourth child of Robert and Romaine German.  He grew up in Columbus, graduating from Columbus High in 1972.  On March 30, 1984, Dick married the love of his life, Susanne Whetstone.  They were blessed with three children, Steve, Scott, and Cassie.  Dick’s passion was spending time with his children and loved being a grandpa to his seven grandchildren.

At an early age, Dick began working with his dad for Custom Carpet Service in Columbus, eventually taking over the business. In 1984 Dick went to work for Walmart as an Assistant Manager.  His tenure with Walmart took the family to various towns in Nebraska, Kansas, and Iowa, finally settling in Carroll, Iowa.  He retired from Walmart after 25 years as a District Manager of the Pharmacy division.  In 2009, Dick and Sue purchased CHC Vending in Council Bluffs, moving one more time to Omaha.  After selling the business in 2014, Dick went to work as a part time maintenance man for H & R Block.

Dick’s hands were never still until cancer prevented him from doing the things he loved.  He had a great enthusiasm for remodeling their various homes.  He enjoyed working on his 1970 Corvette and 1969 Chevelle, and delighted in showing them at car shows and parades.  Dick was selfless in helping family and friends with their projects.  He never passed up the opportunity to have a beer with a friend.

Dick was a member of Covert Lodge #11 and Tangier Shrine.  He was a member of Tangier’s Vintage Iron Club, serving as President in 2020.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Romaine; infant brother, Robert Joseph. Dick is survived by his wife, Sue; sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Kate German, Scott and Michelle German; daughter and son-in-law, Cassie and Nathen Hull; 7 grandchildren; brothers: Bill, Terry, Todd and Dan; sisters: Linda Aerni, Sue Gonka and Barb Degn; many nephews, nieces and friends.

MASONIC SERVICE: Friday, June 28th at 5pm at the Tangier Shrine Center, 2823 S. 84th St., Omaha, NE 68124, followed by  A CELEBRATION OF LIFE until 8pm.  In lieu of flowers, memorials will be directed by the family.
