Dad was born in South Omaha and had an older sister, Jean, and a younger sister, Kathleen. He attended St. Patrick Grade School.  His parents, Anthony Leo “Tony” and Cecilia, ran a restaurant on 15th and Leavenworth.  When dad was eleven years old, his father died unexpectedly.  He was the only “man” in the house with his mother, an aunt, and two sisters.  He attended St. Joseph High School where he met Mom.  After the junior-senior prom, they knew they were meant for each other.  Shortly after they graduated, they were married and started their family.

Dad worked at the Omaha World-Herald and, later, the Sun Newspaper as a machinist.  In his forties he changed jobs and became a diesel mechanic at Cummins.  Together Mom and Dad raised eleven gregarious, hard-working, and fun-loving children. Dad was generous with his time and talents and often took the boys along to teach them the technical skills of construction and mechanics. Sorry, girls, you got to stay home and cook and clean with Mom. During times of struggle, Dad would write to the Poor Clares for prayers. Dad taught us commitment, a strong work ethic, and a love of God.  Mom and Dad were very involved at Holy Cross Parish for over 35 years.  As Mom said the other day, it wasn’t perfect but we had a lot of fun.

On behalf of all the Bertagni children (Sue, Monsignor Ted, Nancy, Steve, Tina & Jody) we send our heartfelt condolences to your family. He & Janet were a major part of our parents (Ted & Mary’s ) lives and very active in Holy Cross as well. We still remember both of them coming to the nursing home the night before our father passed away to be with him and share stories with the rest of us. Such good, genuine people! We will keep all of you in our thoughts and prayers.

My dad was Bob’s cousin and close friend. Bob was always kind to me and I remember his big smile and jovial nature very well. I’m sorry to learn if his passing, but I believe he lived a very full and admirable life. May he Rest In Peace.
