Robert Gene Nordby

NORDBY, Robert Gene, son of Reinhard and Lillie (Larson) Nordby-Heggen, was born on April 8, 1932 in Shelby, IA. He lived on a farm close to Manilla, Iowa and attended area schools before enlisting in the Navy on December 15, 1950. He served on ships in the Pacific during the Korean Conflict. While on leave, he was married to Mary Alice Voge on September 4, 1953. To this union were born three children: Gary, Rebecca “Becky” and Jerry. After his discharge from the Navy in 1954, Bob farmed in the Manilla area for 3 years before moving to Logan, IA. For 24 of the 26 years he lived in Logan, Bob owned and operated a cob-processing business. Upon moving to Omaha, Bob married Elizabeth “Betty” Backes on August 5, 1988. He drove a charter bus for two years before working as a dispatcher at the main Post Office in Omaha until his retirement in January of 1995. On March 6, 2005 he married Joyce Hansen of Omaha. Bob was involved in church activities, including serving as an elder and a trustee at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Logan, IA, and volunteering at King of Kings Lutheran Church in Omaha. Bob enjoyed woodworking, playing card games of all kinds, hunting, and traveling all over the United States. Volunteerism was very important to Bob, whether at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, the Ely, Minnesota Wild Bear Sanctuary, or Custer State Park in South Dakota. Bob passed away on September 1, 2012 at the Millard Good Samaritan Home in Omaha at the age of 80 years, 4 months and 24 days. He was preceded in death by his parents; wives, Mary Alice and Elizabeth “Betty”; sister, Igleedtis Hodne; brothers: Vernon, Marvin and Milo. He is survived by wife Joyce of Omaha; children: Gary Nordby and wife Rhonda of Logan, IA, Rebecca Hornbeck and husband Jon of Omaha, Jerry Nordby and wife Stephanie of Winchester, OR; grandchildren: Ryan, Brittany, Adam and David; sisters, Garnet Axland of Irwin, IA, Norma Mitten and husband JaVain of Hamilton, MO, Kay Madsen and husband Richard of Lincoln, NE; several nieces, nephews, other family members and many friends. The family will receive friends Monday, September 3, 6pm to 8pm at the West Center Chapel in Omaha. SERVICES Tuesday, September 4, 11am at King of Kings Lutheran Church, 11615 “I” St., Omaha. Interment, Voss Mohr Cemetery. The family suggests memorials to Smile Train or charity of your choice.
