Robert H. “Bob” Guy, of Omaha, Nebraska, has gone to be with the Lord on July 13, 2021. A CELEBRATION OF LIFE MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held at Westwood Community Church at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 29th.  Interment with military honors will precede the service at 9:00 a.m. at Omaha National Cemetery.  Memorials may be given to Westwood Community Church or to the Alzheimer’s Association of Nebraska.

Bob was born and raised in Omaha where he, his parents, Elmer and Cathryn Guy, and his sister lived in North Omaha.  He was an athlete, a member of DeMolay, and worked part-time jobs including a newspaper carrier for the Omaha World Herald and a grocery store clerk.  Bob attended Omaha North High School and Nebraska Wesleyan University where he played football and was a member of Phi Tau fraternity.

He joined the United States Navy and served with VF-14 “Top Hatters” Fighter Squadron in Jacksonville, Florida.  During his service, the squadron deployed to the Mediterranean for the first overseas deployment of USS Forrestal (CV-59).  After his Naval Service, Bob worked at several Woolworth stores then began his 38-year career with Omaha Public Power District.  After many years with the Transmission and Distribution Department at 42nd and Leavenworth, Bob joined the OPPD Labor Relations Department.  He served in a variety of roles with OPPD Human Resources leadership where he supported company employees and was particularly proud of his work as OPPD built and staffed the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station.

Bob was devoted to his wife Sue and they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year.  He was a caring and dedicated Dad to his three sons, Bob, Jr., Doug, and Dave – he coached many athletic teams, served as Scoutmaster, and taught their Sunday School classes.  Later, Bob supported and encouraged his son’s and their wives in their careers, marriages, and families. He was immensely proud of his four grandchildren Rachel, Tony, Ryan, and Kara and his three great-grandchildren.

Bob had a servant heart, and his life and time was dedicated to his church and the youth of the community.  He was an active member of Westwood Community Church for over 60 years.  Bob served as a Chairman of Deacons, cared for the first church building on Westwood Drive, and was directly involved in the purchase of land for the current church building. He taught Sunday School and volunteered to support the facilities used by the preschool and youth programs over many years.  Bob was a community youth leader as a coach and program leader within Omaha Suburban Athletic Association and Gladiator Athletic Association and commissioner of the Foundation Youth Football League.  He was a Douglas County Volunteer Deputy Sheriff and Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 408.  In 1971, he was recognized by the U.S. National Bank of Omaha Good Citizen Award, and by Governor Charles Thone in 1982 for his leadership in youth athletics.  In later life, he was the President of the University of Nebraska Women’s Basketball Booster Club and a volunteer and mentor at Ponca Elementary School.

Bob enjoyed playing and watching golf and cheering on the Huskers – both the football team and the Lady Huskers basketball team.  He and Sue enjoyed their travels overseas, including Great Britain, Scotland, Australia, Japan, China and with the church group to the Holy Land.  He had considerable pride in caring for their home and yard and in helping the neighbors as he could.  Bob was quietly charitable, with small or large gifts, always looking for ways to help those in need or as thanks for their service in the church and the community.

Bob is survived by wife, Sue; sister, Marilyn Simpson (Andy) of Omaha, NE; children: Robert H. Guy, Jr. (Theresa) of Lexington, SC, Dr. Douglas M. Guy (Rhonda) of Omaha, NE, David A. Guy of Phoenix, AZ; his grandchildren: Rachel Booth (Edmund), Anthony Guy, Ryan Guy (Kristi), Kara Guy; three great-grandchildren; aunts; uncles; many nieces and nephews.
