Robert R. Scebold

ROBERT R. SCEBOLD, age 89, of Missouri Valley, Iowa passed away Friday, November 20, 2009 at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Blair, Nebraska. Robert was born January 14, 1920 to Charles and Ruth (Fountain) Scebold, he attended Ford Elementary School and Missouri Valley High School, graduating with the class of 1938. Robert married Fern E. Yager of Missouri Valley on April 8,1939. Robert was a life long resident of Harrison County, he also worked as an accountant in Logan, Iowa for five years before being called to duty in World War II. He served in the Third Infantry Division of the United States Army from June 1944 until January 1946, including duty in the European Theater of Operations during the latter stages of the war. He saw action in France and Germany, earning two Overseas Service Bars and two Bronze Battle Stars. He also received the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. Following the Allied victory over Germany in 1945, he continued his service as company clerk in Germany until his return to the US. Upon his honorable discharge, he was ranked as a Technician 4th Grade (the equivalent pay grade of a sergeant) After the War, he farmed for LeRoy Quist in Missouri Valley and later joined his father on the family farm. During his long career, he helped to introduce new techniques in modern farming in the region. He was responsible for the growth of an expanding and successful family farming operation focused on the seed corn and soybean production on land that eventually encompassed nearly 1,500 acres in the fertile Missouri River Valley west of Missouri Valley. In October 2003, after nearly 60 years of life on the farm, he joined Fern at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Assisted Living in Blair where they spent the final years of their lives. He greatly enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a member of Gideon’s International and was active in church and church related activities throughout his life. Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Fern of 65 years, his sister Helen Meade and his elder son C. Edward Scebold Survivors include his Daughter Eleanor Buerstetta of New Jersey, son Richard and daughter-in-law Jonetta of Missouri Valley, ten grandchildren and twelve-great-grandchildren that resides in the Midwest, Canada and both the East and West Coasts. He also survived by his sister Mary Keyon of Council Bluffs. Visitation with the family will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Sunday night at the Hennessey-Aman Funeral Home in Missouri Valley The family would like to invite everyone to a time of lunch and fellowship at the Junction Café in Missouri Valley following the committal service Military Honors will be conducted at the graveside by the Julius F.
