Roger Donald Arney

ARNEY, Roger Donald Jun 1, 1940 – Sep 2, 2012 Roger Donald Arney was a man with a great heart. From his birth at home on June 1, 1940, in Morrowville, Kansas, to his death on September 2, 2012, he lived a life marked by his interest in people, world events and politics, the arts, and his inimitable sense of humor. He loved his sweetheart, Suzanne Smith Arney, and being part of the big Smith clan. He loved his and Suzanne’s children: Donald (and Tracy) Arney of Portland, Oregon, Rob (and Kristi) Smith, and Letitia Smith, all of Omaha. He was overjoyed to be called “BooBoo” by grandchildren Kaitlin, Chloe, Story, and Harry. He was known as “Don Arney” until he graduated from North Platte High School in 1958 and joined the Air Force. He liked to say he was a veteran of “the Bermuda campaign” since he served most of his enlistment there, and had a great time playing drums in the NORAD Band. After university in Northern California, he had a 25-year, peripatetic career in the Union Pacific Railroad operating department. The arts brightened his life, especially contemporary art and films, jazz, and dance. Retirement opened the way to many rich years making pottery. He lived every day of his life, and leaves behind a little bit for each of us who loved him. MEMORIAL SERVICE Sunday, Sept. 9, 2pm at First Unitarian Church, 3114 Harney Street.
