S. Michael Hughes

December 17, 1937 – July 17, 2023

Mike Hughes passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Monday, July 17 in Omaha, NE. He was born December 17, 1937, in Benson, MN to Lloyd and Dena Hughes. He was the oldest of eight children and was preceded in death by his brother ,Gary. He is survived by sisters: Darlene Noble; Carol Connelly; Barb Samuelson; Pat (Paul Pittman) and Mary Hughes; brother, David (Jo) Hughes.

Mike graduated from University of North Dakota with a degree in business and married Vonnie Pierce on 8/2/1957 in Crookston, MN.

He had three sons and a daughter, living his life in Breckenridge, MN; Bismarck, ND; Fargo, ND; East Lansing, MI; Detroit Lakes, MN before retiring in Omaha, NE and Peoria, AZ.

Mike was an avid outdoorsman, spending many days hunting and fishing with his sons with fondest memories of the Canadian fishing fly-in trips taken with his oldest son, Jon, and close friends. One of his greatest prides was designing and building a lake cabin with his three sons on Little Floyd Lake, MN. He was at peace on the water in Minnesota and Maui with his wife, Vonnie.

Mike spent his career in the seed business and loved the interaction with the dealers, but most of all his industry friends and team at Interstate Seed & Grain Company in Fargo, ND. He built lifelong friendships through his work and cherished all those relationships until his last day.

Mike ascended to a President role with Interstate Seed & Grain Company and later Michigan State Seed in East Lansing, MI. He and Vonnie enjoyed traveling internationally for business to Japan; Turkey; Holland and other countries. Mike, Vonnie and his son, Mark, later founded a cat litter company, Swheat Scoop, and successfully ran it for many years before selling the company and retiring.

Mike was an avid golfer, fisherman and accomplished wood worker. He and Vonnie were married for 59 years before she passed in 2016. He is survived by his children: Jon (Sheila) Hughes; Mark (Peggi) Hughes; Tim Hughes and Julie (Rocky) Luna; seventeen grandchildren: Megan (Dan) Leslie; Katie Hughes; Kerrie (Jessie) Perron; Logan and Mallory Hughes; Shane and Austin Paeper; Owen, Emmy and Max Hughes; Alexis, Lindsay, Abby, Natalie and Ainsley Krehbiel; Luke and Dylan Luna; 2 great-grandchildren, Leo and Mac Leslie.

Mike was a respected businessman, loving husband, father, and grandfather. You always knew where you stood with Mike, as he wanted you to be the best person possible. He will be greatly missed, but we are glad he is dancing in heaven with Mom.

VISITATION: Wednesday, July 26th from 6pm to 7pm at the West Center Chapel, followed by VIGIL SERVICE at 7pm.  MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL: Thursday, July 27, 2023, at 10:30am, Mary Our Queen Catholic Church, 3405 S. 118th St.  Inurnment, Calvary Cemetery.

    So many great memories that I treasure. Mike always made me feel special. Loved my Uncle Mike! Wonderful to think of Vonnie and Mike together again!

    Mike was a great guy and will be missed by Karen & I. We were lucky to meet Mike & Vonnie when we bought their house on the 5th fairway of Oakhills CC. He and Vonnie will always be a great memory to us.
