    Dear Anna, Scott & Brian,

Our sincerest condolences to your family at Sam’s passing. We wish we could be there tomorrow and Saturday with family but please know you are all in our prayers that the Lord will comfort and support each of you at this time of sorrow. But please take strength from the knowledge that the Sam we all know and love lives on and has been reunited with family and friends on the other side of the veil. We will always cherish our memories of our times together and, for me, having Sam, Derl and Mark truly be the brothers I wouldn’t have had otherwise – that’s how I will always remember him.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. In 30 years at UNMC, I have never met a more genuine, kind, and approachable professor than Sam. He will be greatly missed. Please take comfort in knowing the brilliance of a shooting star is enjoyed mere fleeting seconds, yet its light endures forever. Sam’s light shines brightly. Rest in peace, my friend.
