Hayes Schoenbohm Schreiner Oct 9, 1920 – Feb 9, 2016 Hayes Schoenbohm Schreiner, age 95 of Omaha and Wharton, TX, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, February 9, 2016, dying peacefully in her sleep. Born in Cumberland, Iowa on October 9, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Elise Ihnen and Hajo Schoenbohm. Hayes graduated from Atlantic High School in Iowa and Peru State College in Peru, NE, where she met “Shrine”—the “love of her life.” They married on May 7, 1944. With her degree in chemistry and home-economics, Hayes worked alternately as a chemist and a teacher, supporting her husband as he pursued his medical degree and pediatric specialty. Their journey led them to Lexington, VA, Indianapolis, IN, Baltimore, MD, Bryan, TX Air Force Base, and ultimately, Omaha, NE where they spent the next 59 years. After her husband died, she moved to Wharton, TX to be with her daughters. As a lifelong Lutheran, Hayes regarded God and family as paramount in her life. Once settled in Omaha, she turned her attention to raising a family and was blessed with three daughters. Her children were always the center of her life. She gave them every opportunity to reach their highest potential through her love, care, education, travel, books, and the arts. Hayes was a voracious reader and shared this with her daughters, reading every Sunday with Holli until her last. As the years progressed, “Zizi’s” love and care extended to her three beloved grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; rocking, cuddling, and playing games with them until her dying day. Hayes’ love and care extended to her community, as well. A lifelong community volunteer, Hayes “pounded the pavement” and served on countless committees and boards for the numerous causes that were dear to her heart, most notably Children’s Hospital, The Creche Home and Madonna School. Golf was Hayes’ passion; playing Field Club, Happy Hallow, OCC, and Inter-Club. Family vacations were planned around courses that she and “Shrine” wished to conquer; the Broadmoor always a favorite. An excellent golfer, Hayes was a two-time hole-in-one ace and Club Champion of her beloved Omaha Country Club. Hayes vowed to live long enough to see the Senior PGA at OCC in 2013, and was greeted like a celebrity when she arrived at the club to see her dream fulfilled. Bridge was Hayes’ other passion. She was a life-long member of many clubs; “dinner bridge” a favorite. The men joined begrudgingly, more because she was a sublime hostess than to play the game. She enjoyed weekly games with several clubs, duplicate at the Omaha Bridge Center and joined three clubs upon her arrival in Wharton. It is most telling that a newly jotted list of “bridge contracts” were by her side the night she died. Hayes was a fanatic Husker. A season ticket holder for years, she spent Saturdays in Lincoln or in front of the “tube” watching THE game. Being in the stands to cheer her Huskers to victory during their back-to-back national championships in ‘70/’71, would always remain a source of great pride. To say that Hayes was a staunch Republican is truly an understatement. No one was better read, more informed, or more on top of the issues than Hayes, including the candidates. Pity the person that ventured a political debate with her. Always dressed to the “nines,” Hayes was stylish and fashionable, wearing her dearly loved high heels until her last days. All of the “girls” (Hayes included) were often clothed in matching dresses for life’s festivities. With Hayes, every birthday was an extravaganza, every holiday a reason to decorate, every day a celebration. Hayes’ greatest gift to those who loved her is that she absolutely lived her life to the fullest, every single day. Hayes was preceded in death by her husband Gilbert C. Schreiner, M.D.; her parents, Elise and Hajo Schoenbohm; and her sisters: Louise, Viola and Ruby. She is survived by her brother, Gilbert Schoenbohm and wife Helen of Atlantic, Iowa; sister-in-law, Phyllis Schreiner of Lincoln, NE; daughters: Debbi Dimmick and husband Gregg of Wharton, TX; Kiki Jacob and husband Mark of Fort Worth, TX; and Holli Schreiner of Wharton, TX. “Zizi’s” precious grandchildren include Josh Dimmick and wife Cassie of Springfield, MO, Kaydi Dimmick Kacer and husband Russell of El Campo, TX, and Kenzi Jacob of Fort Worth, TX. Her darling great-grands include Madison Pearl, Audrey Rehe, Benjamin Russell, and Brooklynn Rehe. Hayes also leaves behind her “adopted daughters” Kathy Dearborn Michaud and Anne Elisabeth Eberhardt, and her treasured nieces and nephews, golf and bridge buddies, and dear friends. VISITATION Friday, February 19th, from 10:30am to 12noon at Korisko Larkin Staskiewicz, 5108 “F” St., Omaha, NE 68117. Family internment to follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
