Cherished wife of Jerry, loving mother to Jane (Jamie) and Eric (Juli), adored grandmother to Alice and Gabriel, precious sister to Donna Lillie Phillips and Merlin (Marilyn) Lillie, much loved by her dear friends, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Sharon was preceded in death by her parents Veronica and Gerald, brother Dale, and nephew Jack.
Sharon Alice deLaubenfels was born on August 25, 1943, in Yankton, South Dakota. She was the youngest child of Gerald and Veronica Lillie. She graduated from Mount Marty High School in 1961 and continued at Mount Marty College where she received her teaching certificate.
She married John Gerald (Jerry) deLaubenfels in 1964. Sharon and Jerry lived in Indianola, Waterloo, and Des Moines, before settling in Council Bluffs for 47 years.
In addition to being a devoted mother, her early professional career included work at Look Magazine and Iowa Western Community College.
A lifelong learner, Sharon returned to school after her kids were grown, receiving a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Journalism from The University of Nebraska Omaha. She continued her education at UNO earning a Master of Arts in English in 1995. Sharon was a university instructor for 22 years. She taught English Literature and Composition at UNO, Metro Tech and Creighton University. She retired from Creighton in 2017.
Sharon had a passion for politics and loved literature, art, and theater. She had encyclopedic knowledge of old classic movies and a deep affection for 60s music.
Her grandchildren, Alice and Gabriel brought her great joy. She was devoted to them and frequently made the trip to Chicago, playing an important role in their childhoods.
In return, Alice and Gabriel made many happy journeys to Horizon Drive to be with their beloved Nana and Pa.
