Shellie A. (Haake) Huismann

August 4, 1958 – January 21, 2023

Shellie A. (Haake) Huismann, 64, passed away on January 21, 2023, in Omaha from breast cancer. Born August 4, 1958, to Lawrence and Bessie Haake in Hastings, NE.  A first-class Girl Scout, she graduated valedictorian from Hastings High School in 1976 and graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a Bachelor of Arts degree with high distinction in Chemistry and Biology in 1980. She completed a professional degree in Medical Technology from St. Francis Hospital Schools of Laboratory Technology in 1982.

She worked in the lab at Children’s Hospital & Medical Center for over 30 years, running tests and becoming knowledgeable in all the areas of the lab. In her later years, she provided lab support directly to patients and doctor’s offices.

She dedicated her life to her children and grandchildren. She raised her kids in her minivan, shuttling them to and from activities and practices. She attended every game and every concert. A quiet leader, she served as Girl Scout cookie mom and president of the high school music boosters to support her children.

Her passion was seeing the world. She traveled to all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, Great Britain, Italy, Egypt, and the Holy Land. She loved both museums and being out in nature, a lifelong learner who read books of every genre.

She was a member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church for 40 years, where she served in many ministries over the years, from teaching religious education and cleaning & pressing altar linens to preparing food for funerals and participating in the Mary & Martha Women’s Ministry. Silent prayer was a pillar of her life; she was commissioned as a minister of praise to offer prayer and intercession for all those in need.

She is survived by her children: Terri (T.J.) and husband, Chris Blunk of Olathe, KS; Matthew Huismann of Omaha, NE; and Karri (Suzie) and husband, Brent Mitchell of Fargo, ND; sister Donnie and husband, Terry Aulgur of Rocky Mount, MO; brother Lawrence II and wife, Carrie Haake of Plymouth, NE; 6 grandchildren, Briana Huismann, Riley Blunk, Matthew Huismann Jr., Turner Blunk, Katherine Mitchell, and Jeremiah Mitchell. And loved nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She is preceded in death by parents Lawrence and Bessie Haake; and sister, Jeannie Haake of Hastings, NE.

VISITATION: Wednesday, January 25th, from 5pm at West Center Chapel, followed by VIGIL SERVICE at 7pm.

MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL: Thursday, January 26th at 10am at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 5801 Oak Hills Dr. in Omaha. INTERMENT: 3pm at Parkview Cemetery in Hastings, NE.

Shellie was one of the most honest, genuine and supportive people I have known. She raised a family that carried on some of her best traits. I’m so glad I knew her.
