Sherwood Patrick Peartree, M.D.

PEARTREE, Sherwood Patrick, M.D., Sep 15, 1920 – Apr 20, 2011. On April 20th, our dear father, Sherwood Patrick “Pat” Peartree, died peacefully in his sleep at age 90 in Bermuda Dunes, CA. Born in Rochester, NY and the oldest of five siblings, Dad was a high school football hero at Aquinas High School and became known as “Golden Toe Peartree” for his prowess in scoring game winning field goals. He received a full ride football scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania; however, WWII would take him on another path. At the height of the War in the Pacific, Dad joined the Army Air Corps and went on to serve in the 5th Air Force as a lieutenant and group navigator for squadrons of Mitchell B-25 bombers. He guided many raids over New Guinea, flying over 50 combat missions and earning two Air Medals and the Purple Heart. Returning from his tour of duty, he completed Creighton University medical school. He later served as the Chief Resident at the Saint Louis University Hospital. He became a board certified Radiologist. After several years, he developed a passion for ophthalmology and was board certified in that field. He was a revered surgeon in the Omaha community. But, we kidded Dad that his real career was on the golf course and eye surgery was “just a hobby.” He enjoyed many years at Happy Hollow. His family and his many friends will always miss his brilliant mind, his great smile and his sense of humor. His loving wife of nearly 60 years, Nancy, predeceased him two years ago. She was the mother of their six children who survive them: Patrick Peartree of Bermuda Dunes, CA., Mary (John) Shebl, Salinas, CA. Edward Peartree North Platte, Julie (Tom) Hillmer, Omaha, William (Bonnie) Peartree, Carlsbad, CA., and Laura (Rick)Schrager, Omaha. Another son, Woody Cleveland, resides in Columbia, South Carolina; also survied by 17 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Heaven is yours now and God’s PEACE also. Know that we love you very much, Dad. Celebration of Life Mass will be at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 6th. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the American Cancer Society or the Open Door Mission.
