Shirley M. (Mehlmann) Good

Shirley M. (Mehlmann) Good

Born: October 19, 1950- Greenfield, Iowa.

Entered into Eternal Rest: January 19, 2025-Omaha, Nebraska

Shirley M. (Mehlmann) Good and her twin sister, Sharlotte, were born on October 19, 1950, in Greenfield, Iowa, to LeRoy and Ida (Spieker) Mehlmann. They had four older siblings: Phyllis (Berry), Lavonne (Krauth), Corinne (Beals) and Keith (Mehlmann). She graduated from Cumberland-Massena High School where she participated in band and basketball. After graduation, she moved to the Omaha area where she took a job as an executive secretary in the Commercial Loan department of the U.S. National Bank. It was there that she met the love of her life, Larry Good, in 1977. On July 14, 1980, they were married at Assumption church in South Omaha and together they had two sons, Brandon and Travis “TJ”. Unfortunately, on April 13, 2010 Travis passed away from bacterial meningitis just three weeks before graduating from Iowa State University with a degree in Civil Engineering.

She was a very dependable and hard-working employee known for her attention to detail and her positive attitude. U.S. National was part of the Banco Banks chain later to become the Norwest Banks. In 1986, she was recognized for those talents and was awarded the Employee of the Year for all their banks.

Once TJ was born in 1987, she left the bank to become a full-time stay-at-home mom. Shirley truly enjoyed being with her sons and the many friends they invited over to the house after school. She delighted in baking treats and being a second mom to many of them. She also took great pride in watching the boys play baseball and basketball and playing golf with them on Sunday afternoons.

In 2015, Shirley and Larry were inducted into the Creighton Prep Athletic Hall of Fame for their 16-year sponsorship of Prep’s American Legion Baseball team. Shirley is one of two females to ever be inducted into their Athletic Hall of Fame.

She loved to travel, bowl and play golf. She became a big Creighton basketball fan and attended their games regularly with an occasional trip to away games. Her favorite sport to watch was Creighton volleyball. So much so that in 2018 she was awarded the Booster of the Year Award by the volleyball team. She also enjoyed flying in planes piloted by Brandon.

In the late ’70s and early ’80s she helped Larry out with the Ranch Bowl that they owned along with Matt and Holly Markel. In 1987, she continued to support Larry when he started the consulting company, PI Midwest which they operated until Larry retired in 2021. In 2019, they purchased the Brazen Head Irish Pub along with their business partner Teri Ochoa who runs and manages the operation.

Shirley’s greatest passion was being a wife and mother. Behind all of Larry’s accomplishments was Shirley’s unwavering love and support, even though she never took credit. Her humility and integrity were passed down to her boys. Anytime someone would ask how her sons were her face would light up with so much joy. She never missed an opportunity to share how amazing her sons were. She was their biggest champion.

Shirley was preceded in death by her son, Travis “TJ”; parents, LeRoy and Ida Mehlmann; father and mother-in-law, William and Eleanor Good; brother and sister-in-law, Gerald and Mary Mornin; sister-in-law, Barbara Wall; niece, Julie Mornin; brother-in-law, John Krauth.

She is survived by her husband, Larry Good; son, Brandon Good; brother and sister-in-law, Dennis and Kathy Esch; sister, Sharlotte and brother-in-law, Steve Michel; sister, Phyllis and brother-in-law, Kent Berry; sister, Corinne and brother-in-law, Jim Beals; sister, Lavonne Krauth; brother, Keith and sister-in-law, Phyllis Mehlmann; brother-in-law, Jerry Wall, Sr.; many nieces and nephews.

Losing a spouse is a painful event in our lives. If you ever need anything, please don’t hesitate to call me. Sending you and your family lots of prayers.

Larry, Brandon and all of our cousins, we were so sorry to hear about Shirley. She always had a way of lighting up the room every time we saw her. She was a joy to spend time with (well….. expect when I was young where she and Sharlotte would play tricks on me about who was who. I would have to whisper to Aunt Ida asking who was wearing what that day as they would switch clothes if they heard me asking!!!). Shirley will be dearly missed.

Please know that all of you are in our hearts and prayers.

    Love,

    Steve, Liz Spieker and family
