Stefania Stankiewicz

Stefania Stankiewicz

February 10, 1927 – October 5, 2020

Stefania was born in Borow, Poland to Julianna and Stanislaw Bierut.  At the age of 16, she was taken from her home and sent to Germany, where she remained as forced labor on a German farm for the duration of WWII.  Once liberated, she met her husband, Jozef (Joseph), while living in a displaced person’s camp.  Their only daughter, Sabina, was born in 1946 in Diepholz, Germany.  The family was sponsored for U.S. citizenship and sailed on the USAT General McRae on September 3, 1949.  They settled in Chicago until 1988, at which point they moved to Omaha.

Stefania loved to entertain, spend time with family, and knit.  She will be remembered for her amazing cooking, hospitality, tremendous generosity, and her strong Catholic faith.  Stefania easily made friends wherever she went.

She was preceded in death by loving husband of 54 years, Jozef (Joseph); and daughter, Sabina Tabaka.  She is survived by son-in-law, Tadeusz Tabaka; grandchildren: Ted Tabaka (Kerrie), Ann Green (Jeff), and Stephanie Mayabb (Justin); and seven great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL SERVICE: Thursday, October 8th, 11am, at the West Center Chapel.  INTERMENT: Calvary Cemetery.
