STESSMAN, John N.

John N. Stessman Feb 9, 1929 – Dec 28, 2014 John was born to Josephine and Carl Stessman on February 9, 1929 in Earling, Iowa. He was raised in a family of five: older sister, Margaret, two mischievous younger brothers, Charlie and Albert, and younger sister, Dorothy. He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict and was awarded the Purple Heart, bronze service star, and Korean service medal. John married Alice Catherine Wilwerding on October 25, 1954 in Earling Iowa. John and Alice were blessed with six children: Debbie, Steve, Jeanne, Paul, Dennis, and Alan. His children recall him as a gentle, quiet, kind-hearted man. John worked most of his life as an Ag Salesman for Co-op and Farm Services. His love of driving led him to driving the Harlan Community School bus. He served as Deacon in the Des Moines Diocese for more than twenty-five years. Competitive in everything he did, John loved playing cards and “played for blood.” John was preceded in death by his parents, Josephine and Carl Stessman, and son Paul. His survivors include his loving wife of sixty years, Alice; five children and their spouses: Debbie and Randy Schroeder and sons Cary and wife Jen (great-grandson Hudson Schroeder), and Tyler Schroeder; Steve and Felicia Stessman and daughters Alexandria and Morgan; Jeanne and Gary Vrbanac and son Matthew and daughter Sarah; Dennis and Peg Stessman and twin daughters Ashley and Adrian, son Nick; Alan and Nancy Stessman and daughters Haley and Paige, son Parker; sisters, Margaret Schechinger, Dorothy Teetsworth and husband Richard; brothers, Charlie Stessman and wife Darlene, Albert Stessman and wife Evelyn. The family will receive friends Tuesday, December 30th, from 5pm to 7pm at St. Stephen the Martyr Catholic Church, followed by VIGIL SERVICE at 7pm at the church. MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL Wednesday, December 31st at 11am at St. Stephen the Martyr Catholic Church with military honors by Millard American Legion Post 374 and VFW Post 8334. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be directed by the family.
