    To the McNaughton Family,

    It is with great sadness that I hear of the passing of Steve McNaughton. Steve was more to me than a professional friend. I have known and worked with Steve since 1984. Our ages were close. Our careers on the railroad were not exactly the same, but similar in time period and scope. Our paths crossed many times throughout our careers until I had the privilege of working for him beginning in 2011.

    My heartfelt condolences go to Suzanne and the family. Steve and I would sometimes talk about our families, which I could always tell he had great love for and spoke of with great pride. Steve is now in a better place. I will hope to see him again in the future when my time comes, and hope to have the privilege of assisting him again on one of God’s projects. God bless you, Steve.

    Steve was a wonderful person who always had light in his eyes and a kind word for anyone. He is so missed and the world is a little bleaker without him. I’ll pay his kindnesses forward, like he would have.

    Please accept my condolences, as Steve was a friend and colleague, as he worked with our industrial hygiene and safety engineering team occasionally. Steve always had a strong will, integrity, and a good sense of humor. We will miss him dearly.

    My deepest sympathies to you, Suzanne, and your family. Steve was a colleague. He always impressed me as a quiet, contemplative professional. Although quiet, he commanded respect because of his competence and civility. I’m sorry he left this world so soon, it doesn’t seem right or possible. I pray that God’s Grace blankets his family during this very sad time.

    To say that Steve was a good friend and colleague would be an understatement. We worked together at a time when I was simply out of my depth. Steve chose to befriend and mentor me and literally kept me afloat, or dare I say it, kept me on track. I will always be grateful.

    Dear Suzanne and family, “May the peace of God, which is beyond all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God and his Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen!”

    Sue and family: On Wednesday night, the world became a little darker when my friendlost his courageous years-long battle against multiple myeloma. Steve was only 59, and was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. We pray for strength and comfort for the family in the sure and certain promise of the resurrection at the last day.
    The UP family also mourns with the family, as we each lost a friend and coworker of peerless integrity; a good man; a consummate professional; a calm voice of reason; a patient mentor; a fair and empathetic leader; a coworker that would keep a confidence and share your burdens; and a dear and trusted friend. We will miss you beyond words. Rest In Peace, my friend, until we meet again.

    “The Lord bless you and keep you;
    The Lord make His face shine upon you,
    And be gracious to you;
    The Lord lift up His countenance upon you,
    And give you peace.”’

    So sorry to hear of Steve’s passing. He was a wonderful person and will be missed by all of us co-workers at Union Pacific. He was the short stop on our Union Pacific Silver softball team in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s and was fun to be around (and was a very good player as well!) Stan McLaughlin

  • Mark and Kim Reimers Posted April 9, 2018 9:34 am

    Steve was one of my all time favorites at UP. What I remember most is how much he cared about his employees. Every decision he made was with their best interest in mind. What more can you ask for? Our condolences to Sue and family.

  • Christi Hornick Posted April 9, 2018 6:59 pm

    Death can never take a good man away, for in the hearts of the people he inspired, the legacy remains and continuous. Steve touched, supported, and inspired so many at Union Pacific. My sympathies for Suzanne and family. Wishing you peace in the difficult days and months to come.

  • Dave Griffin Posted April 10, 2018 7:33 am

    Steve has always been the shining example both of a coworker and a professional in his field! No issue was
    ever too small nor too large, nor unsolvable! Steve’s positiveness and infectious smile were always the brightest in the room! You will always be remembered. Condolences to all who will remember you!
    May they enjoy “Fair Winds and Following Seas” until we meet again!

  • W. Lee Hammond Posted April 11, 2018 5:05 pm

    My condolences to Sue and the whole McNaughton family. Steve and I were old Missouri Pacifc railroaders who shared many stories of our time as track managers in the 1980’s, as engineers in Spring, TX and finally in the environmental department until our retirements. Steve was one of the best people to work with always willing to lend a hand or offer sound advice. I’ll remember Steve as one the great colleagues and all round good guy.

  • Lane Sekavec Posted April 15, 2018 4:48 pm

    Hearing of Steve’s passing saddened me but I was also a bit relieved as I knew he was no longer in pain. Working with Steve the few times I did was always a treat since he was always in such a positive and cheerful mood. It always made me wish that I had the opportunity to work with him more.

    He was the epitome of professional, always ready to assist be it with a phone call or face-to-face conversation. Thinking back on some of the times I chatted with Steve, I’m reminded of his willingness to help me with any question I had, even when it involved work he had done years prior (and which I “might” have forgotten we had already discussed). No matter…….Steve’s response was always one of being helpful and cheerful and taking time to chat for a bit on personal items that we found humorous, frustrating or just plain strange.

    The world may have lost Steve’s physical presence but the legacy he left, both personally and professionally, can never be dimmed. May he rest in peace.

  • Lana Kuball Posted April 23, 2018 8:24 am

    Our sincere condolences to Suzanne and family. We had the privilege of singing with Steve each year when they visited Chatiton. Steve’s voice was beautiful and you could tell his genuine love for family and life. Heaven gained a beautiful singing tenor in the heavenly choir of angels. Dave and Lana Kuball

  • David Smith Posted May 6, 2018 6:24 pm

    Please accept my deepest simpathy as I just found out about Steve. Steve was a great person, a gentle and caring man and that really stood out with me during the time I worked as a contractor at UPRR in the early 2000’s. I’ve never met a man that was so soft spoken and caring. Prayers go out for Steve and his family at this time.
