She grew up in Maloy, Iowa and finished the last two years of high school in Mount Ayr. Her brothers paid for her to go to Duchesne College in Omaha, where she obtained her nursing degree. After graduation she began her nursing career in Hobbs, New Mexico, where her brother John and his family were living. While in Hobbs she met and married Alex McBee, with whom she had one daughter, Katie. She was also stepmom to three children: Mike, Andre and Bill McBee. Eventually Monica and Katie moved to Omaha where Monica completed her Masters Degree in social work and became a psychiatric social worker at Douglas County. In 1977 she married Dr. Bob Stryker, becoming stepmother to Dave, Cindy, Debbie and Jim. Settling into the role of homemaker, she found time for golf, knitting, and making Artisan Bread, and she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. After Bobs death, Monica was able to live independently for the rest of her days.
