Susan J. (Zurek) Slezak

Susan J. (Zurek) Slezak

June 18, 1954 – May 21, 2022

Susan Jayne (Zurek) Slezak was born June 18, 1954 in Omaha, Nebraska to Eugene and Shirley (Welniak) Zurek.  Sue grew up in Omaha and graduated from Ryan High School, Class of 1972.  She was active in high school and developed many close friendships, many of which she maintained throughout her life.  Sue always enjoyed seeing her classmates and was looking forward to her 50th class reunion this fall.  Sue continued her education, receiving an associate’s degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

“Susie” met Richard Slezak in the mid-1970s, fell in love, and the two were married on January 26, 1980.  They were blessed with two children, Michael and Stacia.  Sue worked as a legal secretary for the majority of her career, with most of her tenure at Fitzgerald Schorr Barmettler & Brennan. In her retirement years she kept busy at Dollar Tree, always making new friendships along the way.

Sue and Rick raised their family in Omaha, first at Holy Cross Parish, and later at St. Thomas More Parish, where both of their children attended school.  In addition to her full-time career outside the home, Sue held numerous other job titles, including PTO Board Member for STM School, Scorebook Keeper for countless seasons of Mike’s Grover Baseball games, Hair and Makeup Artist for all of Stacia’s dance recitals, the family Chef, and arguably her favorite title of all, “Grandma Sue” to Jayci, Emmery, and Finley.

Sue was loving, strong, and had the most generous heart.  She always put the needs of her family and others before her own.  Sue was proud of her Polish heritage and enjoyed storytelling and reminiscing. She was very social and enjoyed investing time with friends and family, whether during holidays, at special gatherings, an occasional catch-up lunch, or even her regular Friday night outings and birthday dinners with long-time friends.  Her favorite color was purple, though she was most often found wearing Bluejay or Cubbie Blue.  She loved the Beatles, Billy Joel, and Frank Sinatra.

Sue passed away at the age of 67 on May 21, 2022 at her home in Omaha, Nebraska. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rick, and parents, Gene and Shirley Zurek. Sue is survived by her son, Michael, of Omaha; daughter, Stacia (Seth) Luther of Bennington; granddaughters: Jayci, Emmery, and Finley; brothers, Gene (Karen) Zurek and Terry (Shelley) Zurek; sister, Kathy (Russ) Sindelar; brothers-in-law, Frank (Kitty) Slezak and Bob (Jane) Slezak; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

VISITATION:  Thursday, May 26th from 5:30pm to 7:30pm at the West Center Chapel, followed by VIGIL SERVICE at 7:30pm.  MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL: Friday, May 27th at 10:30am at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 4804 Grover.  Interment: St. John Cemetery.  Memorials will be directed by the family.

Stacia and Michael, we were so sad to hear about your mom, but her picture shows how much she enjoyed life and those three granddaughters. We know she is in a heavenly place now. 23/23.
