Thelma M. Johnson

Thelma Maxine Johnson (Weaver) passed away on Friday, September 11, 2015 at Longview Care Center in Missouri Valley, IA. The family will share in a visitation with a light supper from 5:00-6:30 pm on Monday, September 14, immediately follwed by a memorial service at 6:30 pm. Both will take place at the Modale United Methodist Church, 108 East Hailey, Modale, IA. Mrs. Johnson was born in Blockton, Iowa October 4, 1929. She excelled in academics and sports and graduated valedictorian from Blockton High School. She attended college in Maryville, Missouri for one year before taking a teaching job in a one-room schoolhouse near her hometown. Thelma spent most of her teaching career at Modale Elementary School, primarily teaching 6th-8th grade math. For several years she attended night and summer classes and received her bachelor’s degree from Dana College in Blair, Nebraska in 1974. She retired from West Harrison Community School District in 1994. Thelma loved reading, playing games, especially Scrabble, spending time with her children on the beach at DeSoto Bend, walking, and watching college sports and professional tennis. After retirement she lived briefly in Logan, Iowa before settling in Blair, Nebraska. She is preceded in death by: her parents, Raymond Orlando Weaver and Dicey Fern Weaver (Golliday) and her stepmother, Joyce Weaver (Scott); her siblings, Iona Force, Duane Weaver, Marie Campbell, Dean Weaver and Faye Weidler. She is survived by her sisters, Fern Leight and Mary Hildreth and sister-in-law Mary. Also surviving her are her children, Michael Johnson (Sharon) and Linda Gastreich (Kent); her grandchildren, Jennifer Weaver (Tom), Cindy Bertelsen (Doug) and Amanda Gastreich, her great-grandchildren, Brandon Bertelsen and Lauren Bertelsen; and many beloved nieces, nephews and their children.
