Thomas E. “Tommy” Shaffer was called home by Jesus, on Saturday, December 28, 2024. Tommy was born on January 30, 1953 to Mr. and Mrs. Gene Shaffer of Omaha, NE. Tommy’s parents combined Irish and Italian heritage, to produce a one of a kind son, who will forever be known for his faith in Jesus Christ. Tommy retired as a Sergeant from the Omaha Police Department, having served the city for 28 years. He was also head of security for Horseman’s Park. He used his electrician, tiling and construction skills along with donating copious amounts time in becoming the fixit man for both his family, friends and neighborhood.
His faith was evident in his marriage, just short of 52 years to Kriss, as his childhood sweetheart, and as a proud father to two sons, whom also serve our country–Tom (Heath) Shaffer as Deputy Chief of Police serving in Omaha, NE and Chad Shaffer, a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Air Force. Tommy will forever be remembered for his large heart, which resulted in a life of giving, which will be hard to match in both his personal finances and time, and remained generous with this his whole life. This generosity did not apply to his homemade Italian Christmas cookies, as he counted each one, often up to 1000 cookies, and told the grandkids he knew the exact number should they consider pilfering any from the garage refrigerator. His Italian dressing recipe was closely guarded and called “Papa Sauce” by the grandkids.
His humor was evident as he could take any mundane event and bring your laughter to tears. He often mentioned his greatest material was his wife and her family, along with the Italian characters of his heritage. Tommy understated any sacrifice he made while overstating those of his acquaintances. A skilled athlete, he used that to coach numerous sports for his sons, culminating in an Iowa state championship in hockey. He transferred not just his public service and athletic prowess to his sons, but his faith as well. He often referred to his construction skills as ¼” and caulk, but that did not do service to his willingness to lend a hand to anyone who needed it.
He and Kriss loved to travel and opened up both their own home and any condo they might own at the time to friends and family. He stayed in contact with all and was the glue to family gatherings. Faced with the knowledge of his pending mortality, he expressed his love for Kriss and God, saying he could accept whatever God has for him, wishing only that he could spend more time preparing his wife Kriss for the inevitable. The personal testimonies of the many people he impacted, from his police work, church, neighbors, coaching, giving, to friends and family whom will forever miss him until reunited on that great day. “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Matt 25:23a.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gene and Barb Shaffer; mother-in-law, Delores Stokes; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Valerie and Kirk Wiles. He is survived by his wife, Kriss; sisters, Linda (John) Ruma, Julie (Frank) Zitnik; sons, Thomas (Adrienne), Chad (Kindra); grandchildren: Kiley Pulido (Kris), Thomas Shaffer, Peyton Shaffer, Ava Shaffer, Creighton Shaffer, Cortlind Shaffer, Cheyenne Shaffer, Claire Shaffer, Philip Metzger, Regina Metzger and Louis Metzger; and one great-grandchild coming in August. He is further survived by his two sisters and brothers-in-law, Sandra and Perly Schoville and Denise and Robert Manners. Tommy impacted many family members, represented by the many nieces and nephews who gave loving support and care to both Kris and Tommy during his heroic last few months.

It has been many years since working together, but I will never forget Tom, his kindness, willingness to help the new guy, his sense of humor, and always trying to get me to go golfing with him – He said he liked golfing with me because I made him look good. God bless you and RIP old friend!
Dianna and I as well as the members of Omaha Police Department Recruit Class 2-74 are honored to have served with Tom. He brought pride, courage and a true respect for the people he served. He inspired all of us with his good nature, sense of humor and dedication to duty. May God bless our brother and his family.
To Kriss and the family. Tom was one of my very favorite people. We worked together at OPD. I considered him a “big brother”. I still talk about the cruise we were part of, thanks to Tom inviting everyone he knew to participate. What a blast. He was also the person who introduced me to a little hockey team known as the Lancers. The first couple of games I witnessed were at Hitchcock Park arena. Little did we know that that team would go from, “Worst to First” and end up being the iconic team it still is today. Tom, thank you for letting me be a small part of your life. Your laughter and humor will always make me smile.
Always exchanged laughs R.I.P. Tommy 🙏🏻
Grew up with Tommy in the old ‘hood; hockey-baseball-football-basketball, cherry bombs, downtown trains, railroad tracks & bridges, etc. Last line from the movie “Stand By Me” says it all…”I never had any friends like I did when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?”
Tom was the best at his storytelling and since of humor. He will truly be missed. Praying for all of his family and friends. It was a pleasure to know him and work with him for so many years.
It was a pleasure spending time and getting to know you. You were a good family man and a good friend. Rest in peace Tommy!!!

Kriss and family: So sorry to hear about Tom’s passing. Dorothy first met Tom 25 plus years ago when she worked at Horsemen’s Park and he was head of security there. We shared a lot of laughs together. We enjoyed spending time with both Tom and Kriss when they lived in Sun Lakes, Arizona. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. May Tom rest in peace.
I am so sorry for your loss. Tom was like a second Dad to me. He always encouraging from coaching our soccer team and teaching me to play sports. I learned so many valuable lessons from him. I remember tagging along to Westside church and his gentle nudge to make me sing.
A man like Tom leaves behind a legacy.
I will see you on the other side Mr. Shaffer.
Thinking about Tom, Kriss & all the family a lot this last week. Tom & Kriss have been great neighbors ever since I moved into the circle. tom almost always had something good to say when we talked & came to my rescue more than once with fixit problems in my condo. The circle’s not going to be the same without him.
What a great man! Loved his family, loved his God and loved being a police officer. Met Tommy in October of 1974 when we started our careers as police officers. I found out real quick that he was a natural leader and had a great sense of. humor. He will be truly missed by everyone that knew him. RIP buddy.
I knew Tom from grade school St Anne’s. I knew Tom from Horsemens Park. He was a really great person he will be missed. My condolences to Kriss and family. He was very proud of his entire family.

Tom was such a great guy. Always will to help – always greets you with a smile.
My sincere sympathy for your loss Kriss and your entire family. Tommie was a great guy with a real caring personality. I will always remember him when we were kids at the Christ Child Center. Since I was a little older he used to follow me around calling me Tom Terrific! But he was the Terrific one!
Heard he was fun to work with and for, during his OPD career. Darn, sure wish I would have had the opportunity to work with him. My heartfelt condolences to the Shaffer family. Go be with God, Tom.
Chris and family, I am sorry to hear about Tom’s passing. I talked to him during his early tests and I sent him an email afterwards while going through treatment. I hope you can get that from his phone. I found out today that I was named an Honorary pall bearer. I can’t tell how proud I am to have given that Honor. I miss him so much to this very day. He did so much for me when I went through my cancer event!! I am a big fan of real friends. Tom was one of those. No greater love is there then one who would lay down his life for a friend and Tom was one of those friends of mine. I will continue my prayers for you and your family. Please let me know If I can help in anyway, even though I’m here in Fl. I’m am so lucky to have had Tom and you in my life.!!!
So sorry for your loss. Tom always had a smile when I saw him!
