Thomas M. Kiefer, D.D.S.
Dec 9, 1950 – Jan 11, 2017

Thomas Martin Kiefer, age 66, died peacefully at the Josie Harper Hospice House on January 11, 2017, with family and friends at his side. He was born December 9, 1950, in Estherville, Iowa.

Tom’s parents were Catherine Connolly and Raymond Kiefer of Estherville. Tom was raised there and graduated from Estherville High School. He went to Creighton University, where he received a Bachelor of Science in 1973 and a Doctorate of Dental Science from the School of Dentistry in 1977.

His world was infused with laughter and fun when he met Michele Halpine from Omaha. In 1979 they were married and made their home in Omaha. Together they raised two children, Elizabeth and Dan. Tom practiced dentistry and Michele was a hygienist in his South Omaha office for almost 40 years. He was diagnosed with cancer in late 2016, and his work was cut short.

Tom made the world a better place, both professionally and personally. He dedicated his career to providing dental care to the underserved and graciously donated his time to a variety of civic organizations. Some examples include an advisory role on the Board of Directors for the Institute for Public Leadership, as well as a lifetime membership with the Nebraska Dental Association where Tom served in many capacities. This sampling demonstrates his devotion to equity for all people in his community.

Tom was particularly fond of his alma mater, Creighton University. There were few limitations when it came to donating his time and talent. He served on many committees, often as board chair, including class reunion committees, the National Alumni Advisory Board, School of Dentistry Alumni Advisory Board, Athletic Board, Alpha Sigma Nu Jesuit Honorary Society, and The Jaybacker Board to name a few. Tom preferred to fly under the radar and do things his way. Creighton saw through his privacy granting him multiple honors including Jaybacker of the Year in 1996, Emeritus Board Member for the School of Dentistry Alumni Advisory Board, and the 2009 Dental Alumni Merit Award Recipient.

He is survived by his wife, Michele M. Kiefer; children, Elizabeth and Dan; sisters, Frances Bollinger and Mary Alice Sawaya (Ramsay); brother, Joseph (Lisa); nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.

The family will receive friends Friday, Jan. 13th, from 5pm to 7pm, with VIGIL SERVICE at 7pm, all at St. John Catholic Church, 2500 California Plaza (Creighton U. Campus). MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL Saturday, Jan. 14th at 10am at St. John Catholic Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Creighton University School of Dentistry, or Josie Harper Hospice House.
