Wally was born on April 26, 1943 in Emporia, Virginia to Carl and Anna Mae Jernigan. Graduating from Tech High in 1961, he joined the Marine Corps serving 4 years, 10 months, and 28 days. Wally became an Omaha Police officer in June of 1968. It is his hope that someday the real person that put the carp in the women’s toilet at the police station will be brought to justice.
After retiring from the Police Department, he worked at Central High, Tarascio Auto Body, then served as Nebraska’s State Athletic Commissioner under Governors Mike Johanns and Dave Heineman.
Wally was very artistic, pursuing many hobbies with a basement full of “treasures” to show for it. He loved sports—as a participant, a spectator and a coach. Two of his favorites were coaching boxing and the 2008 National Champion Senior Softball team. His proudest times were watching his son Michael coach Westside’s wrestling and football teams.
Seeing and listening to his grandchildren, Gable, Gibson and Griffey, brought the biggest smiles to his face. He will forever be their Papa Wally.

Sandy, Cathy Jo and families, so sorry for your loss, but I am confident he is free of pain. I will always cherish all of our childhood memories, including our devilish pranks. I am asking God to keep His loving arms wrapped around you all as you travel this road of grief, and as each of you continue your life journey without Wally. Much love to all. Beverly
