Wayne L. Smithberg

SMITHBERG, Wayne L. Jun 17, 1943 – Jul 15, 2014 Preceded in death by parents, Leonard E. and Elizabeth M. Smithberg; brother, Stephen W. Smithberg. After his military service in the U.S. Air Force in Africa, he began classes at UNO. After a year, he took a sabbatical to do a walking trip around the world for a year. With a flight ticket sixteen feet long, he took off. After this adventure, he returned to UNO and received his Master’s degree in psychology. He worked three years for ADC (Aid to Dependent Children), then took a psychotherapist position at St. Vincent Hospital in Billings, Montana for 35 years. During this time he continued to explore the world, eventually seeing 193 countries. He enjoyed sailing, skiing, skydiving, hiking and other activities. He leaves behind his sister, Kathleen Smithberg; brothers, John Smithberg (Virginia) and Richard Smithberg (Susan); seven nieces and nephews; fifteen grandnieces and grandnephews; many cousins and friends. The family will receive friends Sunday, July 20th from 3pm to 4pm, followed by VIGIL SERVICE at 4pm, all at the West Center Chapel. MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL Monday, July 21st at 10am at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church with military honors at church, following Mass, by Benson VFW Post 2503. Interment, St. Mary Magdalene Cemetery. The family suggests memorials to Hillcrest Hospice or Granville Assisted Living.
