WEGENER, Larry Edward, Ph.D.

Larry Edward Wegener Jan 22, 1946 – Dec 10, 2014 Larry Edward Wegener, Ph.D., passed away in Omaha at age 68, surrounded by his loving family. Larry is survived by Carol, his wife of 45 years, and six children—Amy, Lori, Matthew, Michael (Trish von Rein), James, and Cait (Jen Skidmore)—and a brother, Lee T. Wegener. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee E. and Bernice Wegener. Born in Wichita Falls, TX, Larry moved to Omaha, where he graduated from St. Peter Elementary School (1960) and Cathedral High School (1964). At Creighton University, Larry earned a B.A. in English and philosophy (1968), an M.A. in English (1970), and was elected to Alpha Sigma Nu, national Jesuit honor society. In 1978, Larry earned a Ph.D. in English from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He spent the succeeding years teaching English and philosophy at Creighton University, the University of Nebraska Omaha, and Metropolitan Community College and publishing six multi-volume reference works on Herman Melville. Throughout his life, Larry enjoyed reading, art, music, woodworking, and amusing his family with his offbeat, playful sense of humor. He was most proud of his children, his teaching, and his accomplishments as a Melville scholar. Private Service and burial. Memorials are suggested to The Society of St. Vincent De Paul Food Pantry.
