WHALEN, Gerald R. “Jerry”

Gerald R. “Jerry” Whalen Dec 30, 1945 – Apr 7, 2015 Age 69, of Omaha. Passed away April 7, 2015 at home. Jerry was born on December 30, 1945 on the family farm in Greeley County to Albert and Alta (Starr) Whalen. He graduated from Greeley Sacred Heart High School in 1963 and from Milford Technological College as an electronic technician in 1966. During the Vietnam War, from 1967-1969 he served in the Army. On Nov. 30, 1968 Jerry married Sharon Pfeifer at St. Michael Catholic Church in Spalding, Nebraska. Later, the couple moved to Columbus, Nebraska where they had four children: Wendy, Shade, Robin, and Kimberly. Jerry worked for Becton Dickinson for twenty-three years. He was named the Columbus Telegram “Father of the Year” (1994). In 2006, Jerry and Sharon moved to Omaha, Nebraska. Spending time with his family, shopping at Menards, fishing and working in his wood shop were some of his favorite pastimes. Jerry was preceded in death by a sister, Lorraine Swinarski; parents, Albert and Alta Whalen; nephew, Bryan Pfeifer. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Sharon of Omaha; daughter, Wendy Sciortino (Scott) and children Sam and Joey of St. Louis, MO; son, Shade Whalen (Kari) and children Caleb, Briggs and Oakley of Marquette, NE; daughter, Robin Whalen and children Sage, Parker, and Evalee of Omaha; daughter, Kimberly Whalen and fiancé Brandon Smith of Omaha; sister, Roberta Whalen of Greeley, NE. VISITATION begins Friday, April 10th at 5pm at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 20500 W. Maple Rd. in Elkhorn, with VIGIL SERVICE to follow at 7pm at the church. MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL Saturday, April 11 at 10am at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Interment, Mount Calvary Cemetery in Elkhorn with military honors by Millard American Legion Post 374 and VFW Post 8334. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Nebraska Stroke Association in care of the funeral home.
