William A. Cutler

CUTLER, William A., Mar 5, 1924 – November 25, 2010. In 1957 Mr. Cutler assumed ownership and management of Cutler Funeral Home, founded in 1901 by his grandfather, H. Lewis Cutler. Cutler Funeral Home merged with the O’Neill family in 2001 and later acquired Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home. Until his death, Mr. Cutler served as a board member of the Funeral Home and also of Walnut Hill Cemeteries, purchased by the Cutler family in 1994. Mr. Cutler was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the son of Dr. William A. Cutler and Florence Taylor Cutler. He graduated in 1941 from Abraham Lincoln High School, and from Creighton University in 1950. An Army Air Corps veteran with the rank of First Lieutenant, Mr. Cutler flew 54 missions as a P-38 Fighter Pilot during World War II. In 2005 Mr. Cutler was honorary Co-Chairman of the Bayliss Park Fund Drive. He was a member of AEOUS; American Legion Post #2; a life member of VFW Post 737; member of 40 & 8; member of Rotary since 1957; past President of YMCA; member for 11 years and President twice of Council Bluffs School Board; recipient of Mercy Heritage Award in 2002; former board member of Christian Home Association and Red Cross; member of Iowa Funeral Directors Association; member of Bluffs City Lodge #71 AF & AM; board member of Salvation Army; trustee of First Congregational Church in Council Bluffs. Mr. Cutler was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Darlene Cutler, January 17, 1982, and by his son, H. Michael Cutler, January 29, 2010. He is survived by wife of 27 years, Betty Cutler; daughters and sons-in-law: Kate Cutler and Boyd Littrell, Beth and Buck Lawler; son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Susan Cutler; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Louise Kraschel; stepchildren: Robert Shockey (Judith), Ann Fyfe (John), Jane Engel (David), John Shockey (Susan), Tom Shockey, Bill Shockey (Janet). The family will receive friends Sunday, 3pm-5pm at Cutler-O’Neill Chapel. SERVICES Monday, 11am, Cutler-O’Neill Chapel, with Rev. Anthony Paff and Rev. Tom Neilsen officiating. Interment, Walnut Hill Cemetery with full military honors by American Legion Post #2. Memorials are suggested to Salvation Army, Children’s Square, First Congregational Church, or charity of your choice.
