William H. “Bill” Zersen
October 27, 1944 – January 20, 2025
William “Bill” Zersen, 80, of Papillion, NE.
Our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, William (Bill) Henry Zersen, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving wife and daughters. We find comfort and peace in the many ways he touched our lives.
He was born in Sioux City, Iowa, and spent much of his early childhood in Pender, Nebraska, before his family moved to Lincoln. A graduate from Lincoln Southeast High School, he continued his education at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He lettered in track and field and was a proud member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He earned a bachelor’s degree in education and later obtained a master’s degree in education administration.
Throughout his professional life, Bill pursued a variety of careers that showcased his dedication and leadership. He began as a math teacher and principal before transitioning into the corporate world as a safety engineer, ultimately retiring from Aon as a Vice President in 2011.
Bill served his community in many ways. He dedicated his time as a Ralston volunteer firefighter and EMT, coached his daughters’ softball teams, and served on the boards of the Millard Fire Department and the Ralston Girls Softball Association. As a young adult, Bill was actively involved in the Ralston faith community, offering his time and service. He also enjoyed refereeing high school and peewee football games, further contributing to the activities he loved.
Among Bill’s favorite pastimes were date nights with family and friends, golfing, fishing, and staying physically active through swimming, running, and biking. A passionate fan of all Husker athletics, he proudly held football season tickets for over 50 years. Above all, spending time with his daughters and grandchildren brought him the greatest joy.
Bill and his beloved wife, Kim, shared a love for travel, creating cherished memories. Their travels included destinations such as the Florida Keys, Hawaii, Grand Cayman Island and various cruises. They frequently traveled with family and friends. Together they shared a passion for health and fitness, movies, dining out, attending concerts, and dancing in their early years, embracing life to the fullest. Their deep connection and shared experiences made their bond unbreakable.
Being a father to four daughters was one of Bill’s greatest sources of pride and fulfillment. Family vacations to Disney World, Colorado, Florida Keys and Table Rock Lake were a cherished tradition. Bill never missed one of their games even if it meant taking a late flight home from work travel. He was always there to help with homework, and one of the many ways he expressed his love was through gifts and surprises. He was a dedicated listener and, more importantly, a source of wisdom and guidance for his family, always ready with a solution.
The arrival of his five grandchildren brought immense happiness to Bill’s life. From the moment the first grandchild was born, his heart grew tenfold. He took great pride in attending their sports and activities, teaching them new things, and offering unwavering protection and tenderness. His love for them was boundless, always striving to make their dreams come true.
He will be forever remembered as the most loving husband, dad, and grandfather, leaving a legacy of love, generosity, and unwavering dedication to family.
Bill’s legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. Though we say goodbye, we take comfort in knowing that his life was full of love, adventure, and unforgettable moments. His spirit, and the memories we shared will continue to guide and inspire us. He will always be remembered and dearly missed by all who loved him.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and June Zersen; brothers-in-law, Roger Magner and Butch Menard; sister-in-law, Sherry Magner; mother-in-law, Ginny Carpenter; father-in-law, Christy Carpenter.
He is survived by his beloved spouse, Kim Zersen; daughters: Laura Zersen, Karrie (Alan) Otoupal, Mary (Richard) Miller, and Ashley (Dustin) Selzer; his cherished grandchildren: Ben, Emily, Ryder, Scarlett, and Skyla.
Family will receive friends Saturday, January 25, 2025 from 2-4pm at West Center Chapel with a Celebration of Life Service at 4pm.

So sorry we never got to know him. His father was my father’s cousin and the Zersens in Nebraska were geographically distanced from the Zersens in Illinois and Wisconsin. Our sympathy to the family.
