L.G. “Jerry” Fouts

January 22, 1933 – January 10, 2025

Lowell Gerald “Jerry” Fouts was born in Omaha to Lowell G. Fouts and Lois Harmon on January 22, 1933. During his formative years, he was raised by his grandparents, Dr. Roy Fouts and Edna Janet. He graduated from North High School in 1950.

Jerry met his future wife, Margaret Ann Buckley, in March 1951 at the St. Patrick’s dance at Cathedral High School. Shortly after, he reported to the US Navy Basic Training in April 1951. He attended school in Memphis before being assigned to Jacksonville Naval Air Station, where he was part of a flight crew involved in anti-submarine warfare in the North Atlantic.

After a year of long-distance courtship, Jerry married Margaret Ann in July 1952 at the Our Lady of Nebraska Chapel at St. Cecilia’s Cathedral before he deployed to France. They lived temporarily in Jacksonville when he was assigned to a patrol squadron in Keflavik, Iceland. He returned home just in time for the birth of their son Michael Timothy in July 1954.

After completing his enlistment, Jerry returned to Omaha in 1955, where their son Mark Dennis was born in August 1956. Jerry graduated in 1958 with a business degree in finance from the University of Omaha. Their daughter Catherine Marie was born in September 1958 while Jerry worked at Firestone in South Omaha. The family continued to grow with the births of Scott Gerald in November 1961 and Patrick Daniel in August 1963. Patrick passed away in October 1963. Jerry began working in the transportation business, first at Watson Brothers, then at Commercial Trucking, and Graves Truckline, all in Omaha.

He and Margaret Ann raised their family in the St. Cecilia’s Cathedral parish and were active in the school and parish. He was generous with his time and talent, coaching football, baseball, and basketball. In 1968, he was baptized in the Catholic Church and was a lector for many years. Their last son, Timothy Roy, was born in May 1970. Jerry loved coaching baseball and was president of Mid-City Middle League in the 70s.

Jerry worked at Graves Truckline for over 25 years until it was sold and eventually closed. He worked for many other trucking companies as a dispatcher, including Yellow, Brown, and USF Holland. He was an active member of the Omaha Transportation Club, serving as president in 1988, and was recognized as Person of the Year in 1993.

The family moved to Ralston in 1984, he became a fixture at St. Gerald’s parish. In addition to being an usher, he enjoyed attending the Friends on Q social events, volunteering at St. Gerald’s parish, and was an Extraordinary Minister, taking communion to shut-ins.

In his later years, Jerry played golf, loved tinkering and woodworking, and enjoyed traveling to see his grandchildren and vacationing with friends. He did not want to ever retire. Into his late 80s, Jerry worked at Applewood Golf Course. He was a fixture at the course, where he was a ranger and made two holes-in-one. He was a lifelong Nebraska Husker football fan, loved going to Creighton Bluejays Men’s Basketball games, and even started watching Nebraska Volleyball in recent years.

After a good life, Jerry passed away peacefully surrounded by family on January 10, 2025. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, five children, 13 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by infant son, Patrick Fouts, and sister, Genne Jacobs.

So sorry to hear of your loss. Heaven is a lot richer now having Jerry there. May God hold you in the palm of his hands and give you peace.

My deepest condolences to Marge, Mike and the Fouts family. Beyond being a husband, father and friend to many, Jerry Fouts also dedicated many hours (and heartaches) to coach young student athletes at St Cecilia. He will always be known to us as “Coach”. Make no mistake about it, “Coach” wanted to win… but he always made sure the bench warmers, like me, got a few minutes on the court in every game. It was also extraordinary that he coached through all the emotions and stress while never ever losing his temper. Those examples alone tell you everything you need to know about Jerry. Mr. Fouts, our “Coach”, was the “Gold Standard”.

Jerri had to have been the nicest guy on the coaching staff up at Cathedral high school. To work full-time at trucking companies, and then put in another 15 hours a week or more as a coach, was a monumental task. As a coach, he was always upbeat and knowledgeable, and always a nice guy to every kid on the team.

Cathy and Family: So sorry to hear of Jerry’s passing. Reading his obit brought back many fond memories of CHS: his help to an inexperienced first year BB coach and then working the clock at varsity games next to him as he kept score (letting the refs know when they blew a call:) I’m glad to see my former scorekeeper and room tech is doing well. I’m sure he was very proud of his family. God Bless and Keep You.

I was so sorry to hear about Mr. Fouts who always seemed to carry a smile on his face and genuine kindness in his heart. Both he and Mrs. Fouts surrounded so many from Cathedral with unwavering love whether it was at a sporting event or from their home. Sending hugs to the entire family.
