Michael G. Brattain, PhD Oct 31, 1947 – Mar 5, 2016 Michael G. Brattain, Ph.D., Eppley Institute professor and associate director for basic research in the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, died on Saturday, March 5, 2016. He was 68. Mike was born on Oct 31, 1947, in Ponca City, Oklahoma to Harold G. and June M. Brattain. In 1965 he graduated from Tenefly High School in Tenefly, New Jersey, where he was, among other things, an accomplished baseball player. Dr. Brattain received his undergraduate degree and Ph.D. in biochemistry from Rutgers University. He began his cancer research career at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, and held faculty positions at Baylor College of Medicine, Medical College of Ohio, University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio Cancer Institute, and Roswell Park Cancer Institute before joining the Eppley Institute faculty in 2007. He served as the associate director for basic research at the San Antonio Cancer Institute and senior vice president for basic research and chair of pharmacology and experimental therapeutics at Roswell Park Cancer Institute prior to being recruited to UNMC as the associate director for basic research at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center and professor in the Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer. At UNMC, Dr. Brattain received the UNMC Distinguished Scientist Award in 2009, the UNMC Outstanding Mentor of Graduate Students Award in 2011, and the UNMC Research Leadership Award in 2015. Survivors include his daughter, Kathleen A. and Dr. Hubertus Franke of New York; son, Michael A. and Laura J. Brattain of Massachusetts; son, Tyler G. Brattain and daughter, Casey R. Brattain, both of Omaha; grandchildren: Karina, Mika, and Wesley; sisters: Elizabeth Borski, Linda Brattain, and Leanne Vogel, all of Houston, Texas; brother Christopher Brattain of Waco, Texas. MEMORIAL CELEBRATION OF LIFE will be held on Friday, March 25th at 4pm in the Eppley Science Hall at UNMC. Private Interment will be held on Saturday, March 12th.
